How to Obtain Canadian Citizenship
Those who were born in Canada gain Canadian citizenship by birth. They have been considered Canadian citizens from day one. For those who were born outside of Canada and whose parents are Canadian citizens, there is an opportunity to become citizens of Canada, as well. This rule can be applied only to the first generation of citizens born outside Canada.
The next group of people who can get citizenship are permanent residents who must fulfill residency requirements. This manner of obtaining citizenship is referred to as “naturalization.” Permanent residents must live in Canada for at least three out of five years.
There are multiple benefits of having a Canadian passport. Some of them are living and voting in one of the world's wealthiest countries, obtaining dual citizenship. Our short guide will walk you through the Canadian citizenship process.

Requirements for Getting Canadian Citizenship
To become a Canadian citizen by naturalization, a person must immigrate to Canada first and become PR (Permanent Resident). After one finishes the immigration process, he must meet more requirements to become a full-fledged citizen.
Those requirements are:
1. Residency requirements- one must prove that he had been living in Canada for 1095 days (three years) out of five that preceded his signed application.
2. File taxes- one must have filed his taxes in Canada for at least three years during the five years before applying.
3. Pass the citizenship test- all applicants between 18 and 54 must take this test or demonstrate their knowledge of rights and obligations as Canadian citizens.
4. Demonstrate language ability- the applicants must demonstrate minimum English or French knowledge level.
When Is the Best Time to Apply for Canadian Citizenship?
Permanent Residents must have lived in Canada for at least 1095 days, which is equivalent to three years out of the past five years before applying for citizenship. In addition, PR (Permanent Residents) must also meet the other minimum criteria before they become eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
What Is the Next Step After Fulfilling All the Requirements?
Those who have satisfied the citizenship authorities and residency requirements and also pass the language and knowledge test will be able to attend the citizenship ceremony. In this ceremony, they will get Canadian citizenship. As a part of the ceremony, the applicant will be asked to swear an oath of loyalty to Canada. After that, he or she will get the card that proves his or her citizenship status, and with it, they can apply for a Canadian passport.
