A permanent resident card, also known as a PR card, is an identity document issued to Canadian permanent residents. The PR card is there to prove their permanent residence status in Canada.
This card is valid for five years and renewable after this period.
Individuals with permanent residence need permanent resident card if they want to travel abroad and use a plane, boat, bus or train to return. Moreover, they must show a PR card to board a commercial carrier traveling back to Canada.
When the permanent resident card expires during the trip aboard, an individual can have problems entering Canada again. This is why we encourage you to renew it on time before going abroad.
The Main Residency Requirements for Renewing My Permanent Resident Card
You can renew your PR card if you have spent at least 730 days physically in
Canada in a five-year period.
However, please note that there are some exceptions to this rule:
1- when you are outside Canada, accompanying a Canadian citizen who is your common-law partner or spouse.
2- you were outside Canada for work, but your employer is a Canadian company.
3- you accompany a Canadian citizen, your spouse, common-law partner or parent to work for Canadian Business abroad.
If you need clarification on this process and legal assistance we highly recommend that you find an immigration law professional who will guide you through this process and help you with any questions you may have. You can book your online appointment today and find out what is required to renew your permanent resident card successfully.
