Electronic Travel Authorization

Visit Canada: Do I Need Electronic Travel Authorization- eTA?

Most travelers need a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization to fly to or transit through Canadian airports.

As a result, an individual from one of these countries must have an eTA when traveling by plane.

Citizens of visa-exempt countries who plan to travel to Canada must apply for Electronic Travel Authorization before their departure. There is an exception to this rule for US citizens. They don’t need TRV or eTA.

The following travelers need an Electronic Travel Authorization need Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel by plane.

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, British citizen, British National (Overseas), British overseas citizen (re-admissible to the United Kingdom), British overseas territory citizen with citizenship through birth, descent, naturalization or registration in one of the British overseas territories of: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Island, Saint Helena, Turks and Caicos Islands, British Subject with a right of abode in the United Kingdom, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, must have a passport issued by Hong Kong SAR., Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, must have a national Israeli passport, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Romania (electronic passport holders only), Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, must have an ordinary passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan that includes the personal identification number, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City State.

What Is an Electronic Travel Authorization?

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for individuals from visa-exempt countries who travel to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to the individual’s passport and valid for up to five years.

If someone’s passport expires in a period of five years, a traveler must obtain a new one and a new eTA. With a valid eTA, an individual can travel to Canada as often as he needs. In addition, he can have as many short trips as required (generally, he can stay in Canada for up to six months).

Who Needs an eTA to Travel to Canada, and Who Doesn’t?

Four types of travelers:

  1. Travelers who require an eTA to transit or travel to a Canadian airport. They don’t need this      requirement when traveling by car, bus, train or boat.
  2. Travelers who may be  eligible to apply for an eTA (they are from Brazil, Bulgaria or      Romania). If they travel by bus, boat, car or train, they still need a visitor visa.
  3. Travelers who can’t apply  for an eTA must carry other identification. Those documents can be a valid Canadian passport for dual citizens, a permanent resident card or a travel document.
  4. Travelers exempt from the  eTA requirement (U.S. citizens or permanent residence holders from this country).

How to Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada?

You can apply for an eTA on the official website of the Canadian government. It takes a few minutes to apply for it online, and a significant number of applicants get their eTA within a few minutes via email. Still, applying for it before booking your flight is best to ensure everything is prepared on time.
